Dear Sixth Grade Families,
Iwould like to Welcome you and your child to the 2015-2016 school year here at Calibre Academy. My name is Brad Parker and it is my honor to be your child’s Sixth Grade Math and Science Teacher. I am a Fifth year teacher and have worked in many fields along the way. This has allowed the benefit of knowing what skills business leaders are looking for.
I have been married to the same wonderful wife for almost twenty five years I have two beautiful daughters, an awesome son-in-law and two handsome grandsons. I am looking forward to working with you and your child in reaching his or her full potential as I have with myself and my family. We will have many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow this year.
I believe that communication is the key to a great parent-teacher relationship. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. I will also do my part by sending out a newsletter via my web page to update you on what we have been doing in class as well as things that are up coming. Wednesday, May 27: Honors Assembly and Class Picnic. Friday, May 29: Last Day of School and Mrs. Parker’s Last Day of Teaching! Monday: Reading: Read for 30 minutes in a 4th Grade Chapter Book. Math: Sunshine Math Problems (due Friday) Word Study: Monday night word study assignment-Test Tomorrow also the WS Book is due! These books will cost $25 cash or check made out to Parker Middle School. I'm pretty sure I ordered a yearbook already but LifeTouch keeps sending me emails telling me to buy the yearbook? The LifeTouch marketing team doesn't track who has ordered and who hasn't.

***This first few days of school we will begetting to know one another. Creating community is a large part of thebeginning of a new school year.***Every day your child will take home his/her Agenda.Please check this each day. It will contain important announcements, homeworkassignments, or completed work. It is very important that your childbrings this back to school each day signed by you. This will help to create a routine andcontinue the communication between home and school. Also, use this as a way tocommunicate with me. For instance, if your child is doing something differentfrom their normal schedule (going home with a friend, being picked up byanother family member, etc) please send me a note to let me know the change ofplans. I will check the Agenda each morning.
***Homework in Math and Science will be for extra practice, to review for a test/quizor if the work was not completed in class. Occasionally We will have Labs orprojects that will require some time at home.

***Attendance is important in sixth grade.What we do in class involves active participation, it is very important thatyour child attends each day. However, I do realize that sickness, familyemergencies, and doctor’s appointments do occur. Whenever possible, yourchild’s schoolwork will be saved for him/her to complete upon their return toschool.

Most of us remember the morning of September 11, 2001. Where we were; what we were doing; who we called. But as the 18th anniversary approaches, we find ourselves living in a time when many of our schoolchildren were either born after that date, or were too young at the time to remember the attacks. For those kids, here are eight thoughtful, sensitive children’s books about September 11, 2001.

Not about the September 11 attacks, this book is instead the story of Phillipe Petit, the tightrope artist who walked between the two towers, just as the World Trade Center was being completed in 1974. For today’s children, who have never seen the towers in anything but news footage, it’s a nice comparison and history of one of the most recognized parts of the Manhattan skyline prior to 2001. (Ages 4-8)

In the aftermath of 9/11, not only did America mourn, but shockwaves were felt around the globe. Kimeli Naiyomah is a student in New York in September 2001. America Is Under Attack: September 11, 2001: The Day the Towers Fell, by Don Brown
How to explain the events, emotions, and tragedy of that day to children who didn’t experience it? Don Brown does just that with this book. These are personal stories, humanizing the first responders, passengers, witnesses, and survivors that were part of that day, while still maintaining a straightforward account of events. The text is engaging, without being sensationalized, the tone direct, but compassionate. A good resource for both parents and teachers. (Ages 9-12)

Nine, Ten: A September 11th Story, by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Unlike many of its contemporaries, this book focuses less on the event itself, and more on the 48 hours leading up to it. Eleven, by Tom Rogers
Nothing exciting ever happens to New Yorker Alex Douglas. Life is pretty much (boringly) normal. Towers Falling, by Jewell Parker Rhodes
New school. New neighborhood. New home. (If you can call Avalon Family Residence “home”.) That’s where Deja lives in a single room with her parents and younger siblings, the communal bathroom is down the hall, and her dad is still sick with the unexplained coughing and nightmares.
